Alice R. Hawkins

Alice R. Hawkins, 84, of Monroe, died Saturday, August 26, 2006, at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. She was born in Middletown, on October 30, 1921 to parents Elbert and Mabel (Menger) Hawkins.

A 1939 graduate of Middletown High School, Alice received her Bachelor in Education from Miami University in 1943 and her Master of Educational Foundations from the University of Cincinnati in 1952. She taught fourth grade at Central School from 1943 - 1982 and received the Virginia Shaffer Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1969. She was instrumental in piloting and implementing educational television vis elementary science classes to the Middletown City Schools by working in conjunction with Purdue University in the early 1960´s. Miss Hawkins has been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Chi Chapter, since 1956, serving as President 1968 - 1970 and long time Treasurer. This sorority promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. Upon her retirement from teaching, Alice served as a volunteer for Hospice of Middletown for fifteen years.

A lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Alice taught the first grade Sunday School class for many years, and was a member of the Women of the Church and the evening church circle.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Mary Margaret Linkins.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Richard T. Linkins of Middletown; nephew, Michael R. Linkins of Ft. Worth, TX; and niece, Sue Ellen Linkins of Spring, TX.

Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Reverend Gene Leiter officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service, from 10:00 - 11:00 am at the church. Interment will be at Woodside Mausoleum.
