Alvin J. Mistler

Alvin J. Mistler, 86, of Monroe, died Sunday, June 16, 2002 at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. He was born in Leavenworth, Kansas on October 17, 1915 to parents John Nicholas and Barbara Hazel (Coppersmith) Mistler.
Alvin graduated from Leavenworth High School in Leavenworth, Kansas in 1932. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science, later known as Kansas State University, in 1936, then his Masters in Geology from Vanderbilt University in 1937. As a member of the university's President's Club and Engineering Advisory Council, he received the Kansas State University Distinguished Service Award and was inducted into the Kansas State University Engineering Hall of Fame.
After graduation, Alvin worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority as a geologist and then served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers from 1941-1946, entering active service as a First Lieutenant and rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel. At the end of World War II, he began his career with Armco Steel Corporation. During his 34 years with Armco, he worked as sales engineer in Kansas City, Missouri and Central Area General Manager in Topeka, Kansas. He then moved to the Middletown Plant as General Manager of sales. He became Vice President of Armco Steel Corporation and President of the Metal Products Division in 1974; Group Vice President in 1978; he then became Senior Vice President and Assistant to the President, the position from which he retired in 1980. He received Armco's highest management award, the General Management Cup in 1976.
While in Kansas, Alvin became a member of the Ohio Engineering Society; the National Society of Professional Engineers; the Society of American Military Engineers; the Masonic Lodge; and the Antioch Shrine. He also served as a member of the board of trustees of the Westminster Presbyterian Church (1955-1966); board of directors for the Topeka Chamber of Commerce; director for the Topeka Park Board; board of directors for the Topeka First National Bank (1961-1968); was conference leader for the Profession of Management Program (1960); board of directors of Salvation Army (1951-1969); finance chairman of the Buffalo Mound Scout District; was director of the Topeka Junior Achievement; and YMCA member (1953-1968). After he moved to Ohio, he served on the board of directors for Middletown Big Brothers and was a board member of the Middletown Chamber of Commerce. Alvin worked with Middfest International, serving as General Chairman in 1982 (the year of Mexico), Trustee 1983-1986, and President of Trustees 1984-1985. He was past president, secretary, and treasurer of the National Corrugated Steel Pipe Association; member of the U.S. Chamber of Congress (Construction Activities Committee) (1971); and vice chairman of the Mound Builders Boy Scout Council (1973-1976). He received the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to the boy scouts.
Mr. Mistler was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine C. Mistler on September 18, 2001; his parents; and two sisters, Rose Estella Mistler and Ruth Elaine Burke.
He is survived by two sons, Richard E. Mistler and Thomas E. (Joan) Mistler; a daughter, Barbara M. (Charles) Crew; four brothers, John W. Mistler and Carroll M. (Rowena) Mistler, George E. (Kathleen) Mistler, and Ralph N. (Janet) Mistler; seven grandchildren, Dr. Susan (Otis Edwards) Mistler, Megan (Jeff) Mistler-Jackson, William T. Mistler, Carolyn (Jonathon) Fendelman, John E. Mistler, Heather (Todd) Diamond, and Michael David Crew; two great grandchildren, Lindsay M. and Luke T. Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their appreciation for the many friends and their kindnesses shown to Gerry and Alvin during their lives.
Reverend Dr. Ewart G. Watts and Reverend Thomas Ramsey will officiate the memorial service.
