Ann B. Schellenbach

Ann Blanche (née Welsh) Schellenbach, was born on December 27, 1911 to parents Peter C. and Ellen (Dwyer) Welsh in Hamilton, Ohio. She died December 6, 2008 in Evanston, Illinois.

She married Edgar S. Schellenbach in 1938 and they moved from Hamilton to Middletown in 1951. Edgar died in December 1981. He had worked in the advertising department of Armco Steel Corporation for many years. After retiring from Armco, he became a stock broker with Vercoe & Company in the Manchester Hotel. They had one son, Peter W. Schellenbach. Pete and his wife Sherry live in Glencoe, Illinois. Ann has four grandsons: Peter (Tricia) of Akron, Ohio; John of Chicago; David (Laura) of Palatine, Illinois; and Teddy of Chicago. She has one great grandchild: Lily Ann of Palatine, Illinois. She is also survived by her cat, Lucky.

Mrs. Schellenbach was raised in Hamilton and attended St. Mary's School and Notre Dame High School. She graduated in 1934 from Miami University in Oxford, with a BS in Education and did graduate work in Expression and Dramatic Art at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music which is now part of the University of Cincinnati. Having graduated in the depth of the Depression, it was difficult to get a teaching job. Ann worked for the federal government doing social work in the relief office in Hamilton, assigned to approximately one-fourth of the city. Mrs. Schellenbach dedicated her life to teaching. She taught expression and dramatic arts from a studio in her home for many years. She also worked for the Middletown Board of Education for which she taught remedial reading and math under the Federal Title I Program, and for the gifted program at John XXIII School. She founded and directed Teen Tactics, a program designed to teach young teens responsibility and social skills, along with dating tips to build their confidence and self-esteem. She gave the Teen Tactics program to Rotary and revenue from Teen Tactics funded a scholarship. Mrs. Schellenbach is a former board member of the Sorg Opera Company and Middletown Symphony Women's Association. She was a member of Middletown Rotary Club and in 2007 was Rotarian of the Year. She was also a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, and was an active member of Holy Family Parish. Due to aging issues and to be with family, she moved to the North Shore Hotel in Evanston, Illinois in September 2007, where she resided until her death.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, December 15, 2008 at 11:00 am at Holy Family Parish - Holy Trinity Church, 201 Clark Street, Middletown with Father John Civille as celebrant. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Rotary Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1061, Middletown, Ohio 45042.
