Catherine M. "Kay" Steele, 81, of Franklin, died Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born in Covington, Kentucky on April 23, 1921 to parents John and Anna (Yendek) Balaz.
Catherine was a lifetime member of the Ohio Women's Bowling Association of Middletown, bowling in leagues and tournaments for over 50 years. She enjoyed playing bingo at the VFW on many weekends.
Mrs. Steele is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Melvin Steele of Franklin; two daughters, Rita (Tim) Gough and Barbara Beatty (Paul Robbins) both of Middletown; eight grandchildren Beth Ann (Curt) Hurst, Michael (Patty) Gough, Kathleen Gough (Eli Crow), Kevin (Lori) Gough, Christopher Gough (Connie Russell), Melissa (Cliff) Schaney, Tanya (Keith) Snelling, and Shelly Beatty; twelve great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Kraft, Anna Cmehil, and Betty Krizan; sisters-in-law Helen Balaz and Dorothy Steele; brother-in-law Robert (Mary Ann) Steele; and many loving nieces, nephews and special friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother John Balaz; a sister Josephine Keuthan; and brothers-in-law Carl Kraft, Steve Cmehil, Clifford Keuthan, Tony Krizan, Clarence Steele, and Kenneth Steele.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the nursing staff in ICU and on Main 2 for their kindness to Catherine during her time there. Also to the doctors that attended her and the Hospice staff who helped with her care.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, December 20, 2002 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Franklin with Father Joseph Bruening and Father Bernard Bruening as celebrants. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery.
