Dorothy Fitzgerald Hopple passed away on Monday, September 19, 2011 at the age of 96. Mrs. Hopple was born in Liberty, Kentucky on June 20, 1915, the daughter of Bessie Fitzgerald Ballard and Forrest Smith Fitzgerald and the sister of William Reed Fitzgerald. She was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1937. Mrs. Hopple lived the majority of her adult life in Middletown, Ohio with her beloved husband, Edward Hall Hopple of Cincinnati, who passed away in 1990. Since 1991, she had been a resident of the Otterbein-Lebanon Retirement Community in Lebanon, Ohio.
Mrs. Hopple was an active member of the Otterbein Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and women's chorus for over two decades. An avid golfer, she played at Wildwood Golf Club and in the Otterbein Golf League where she bested many of the younger men until recently. She was committed to volunteering and helping others. Among the organizations Mrs. Hopple supported are the Middletown Hospital where she volunteered for 32 years and the Otterbein-Lebanon Retirement Community, where she spent countless hours behind the counter in the Country Store and cafeteria and was honored with the Spirit of Otterbein award.
Mrs. Hopple is survived by two children, Forrest Edward Hopple of Franklin, Ohio and Elizabeth Hopple Battle of Marietta, Georgia and three grandchildren, Andrew Forrest Hopple of Dayton, Ohio, David Marriott Battle, Jr. of New York, New York and Sara Elizabeth Battle of Atlanta, Georgia.
A private graveside service will be held in Middletown, Ohio.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Otterbein-Lebanon Benevolent Fund, 580 North State Route 741, Lebanon, Ohio 45036.
