Eugenie Gardner Millan, 91, of Middletown, died Sunday, December 7, 2008, at Atrium Medical Center.
She was born in Middletown on March 2, 1917 to parents Colin and Ethel (Ames) Gardner Jr. Her mother died in the flu epidemic of 1918 when Eugenie was only 18 months old. Her father and great grandmother and eventually second mother, Ellie V. Gardner raised her. Her grandfather was Colin Gardner Sr. and great grandfather, Francis Jefferson Tytus. Eugenie attended Miss Porter's school in Farmington, Connecticut and Holten Arms in Washington DC. and before marriage was active in kindergarten work. On September 10, 1938, she married Robert Q. Millan, and they celebrated their 70th anniversary this year. She was an avid gardener and a member of the Middletown Garden Club. She was also a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension. She was lovingly cared for at home by family and devoted caregivers for the past eight years.
Mrs. Millan is survived by her husband, Robert Millan; three daughters, Eugenie (Thomas) Campbell, Elizabeth (Lewis Seidner) Millan and Cinda (Kent) Goforth; ten grandchildren; and seventeen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ames Gardner, Stephen Gardner and Colin Gardner III; and sister, Nancy Huston.
Memorial service will be held Friday, December 12, 2008 at 11:00 am at Church of the Ascension, 2709 McGee Ave., Middletown with The Reverend Jackie Matisse and The Reverend Eileen O'Reilly officiating. Private inurnment will be held for the family.
