Gene 'Tom' Sawyer

Gene T. “Tom” Sawyer, 67, of Middletown, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at Middletown Regional Hospital. He was born in Raleigh, North Carolina on February 8, 1939 to parents Kholas and Myrtle (Hassell) Sawyer.

Tom retired from the United States Army after 20 years, having served in Vietnam where he earned the Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. He worked at the Middletown Board of Education for 11 years and was currently working at Middletown Regional Hospital in the housekeeping department. Tom was a member of the American Legion Post 218 and had been dubbed the Mayor of Mayfield.

Mr. Sawyer is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dorothy (Piedel) Sawyer; a daughter, Crystal M. (James) Prater of Middletown; two sons, Theodore Sawyer of Middletown, and Thomas E. (Tonia) Sawyer of Carlisle; a sister, Viola (Collin) Parker of Cheaspeake, VA; brother, Carroll Sawyer of Elizabethtown, NC; seven grandchildren, Karina, Tommy, Avery, Savannah, Cortnee Sue, Jamesie, & Justice; two step grandchildren, Brittany, & Olivia ; his cousin, Nita Faye Sproul of Roper, NC; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, friends, and co-workers.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 7, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. (at Bonita Dr.), with Chaplain Jesse Thornton officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 218 Honor Guard.
