George P. Irwin

George P. Irwin, 90, of Middletown, died Thursday, February 26, 2009, at Atrium Medical Center. He was born in Washington, D.C. on October 1, 1918 to parents George T. and Mary Jane (Phipps) Irwin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte C. (Winstel) Irwin in 1991 and by his parents.

George graduated high school in Martins Ferry, Ohio, attended Kiski Prep School in Pennsylvania, and went on to attend The Ohio State University in mechanical engineering. He started out working for Curtis Wright in Columbus, Ohio. He then worked for Aeronca (Magellan) in Middletown from 1942-1979 where he retired as Vice President / General Manager. While there, George played a major role in developing the honeycomb heat shield for the Apollo Space Program. He also was on the first 747 non-stop flight from New York to Tokyo. George went on to work for Fairchild Industries in Maryland and ended his career as President of CTL in Cincinnati in 1982. He volunteered with Meals-On-Wheels for 17 years and served on the boards of the Senior Citizens and United Way. George was a wonderful gentleman, well respected by all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughters, Mary Lynn (Kenneth) Jubett, Diane (Ira) Mahakian, Pat (Carl) Esposito and Stacy (Dr. Stephen) Labbe; brother, James C. (Sue) Irwin; eight grandchildren, William Irwin Jubett, Christopher Scanlon Jubett, Scott Martin Mahakian, Lauren Elizabeth (Jorge) Padilla, Julie Catherine Esposito, Jennifer Lynn Esposito, Jared Labbe and Elizabeth Peyton Labbe; and several nieces, nephews and other family members.

Funeral Service will be held Monday, March 2, 2009 at 11:30 AM at Woodside Cemetery Chapel, 1401 Woodside Blvd., Middletown with Reverend Herman Emmert officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00 - 11:30 AM at the chapel. Entombment will be at Woodside Mausoleum.
