Glenn E. Selby, 79, of Middletown died Saturday, August 17, 2002 at Middletown Regional Hospital.
Glenn was born August 5, 1923 in Middletown to, Orion W. and Helen (Pennell) Selby. He graduated from Middletown High School as Co-Valedictorian in 1941 and attended the University of Cincinnati in Metallurgical Engineering. He was a Registered Professional Engineer. Post graduate education included Harvard Business School and numerous research management seminars.
He worked for 43 years at Armco Steel as a Metallurgist and finally as Manager of Research Administration. He represented Armco Steel and The United States steel industry at international standards conventions for over 20 years, serving the last 10 years as chairman of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group for the U.S. steel industry and for the U.S. test methods for steel. Glenn also represented Armco on numerous national standards committees, such as ASMT and MPC.
Glenn married Elizabeth May Rose from Christopher, Kentucky in 1944 and was married for 56 years. Elizabeth died on June 11, 2001. His late wife, better known as Betty Selby, was a top real estate agent for Coldwell Banker during the 1980's and 1990's.
Glenn achieved life Master status in the American Contract Bridge League and was a regular player in the Middletown Duplicate Bridge Club. He served as director of the game from 1988-2000.
He was a past member of several community organizations such as, Lion's Club and Rotary. He served on the Middletown Civil Service Commission from 1964-1974 and was Chairman from 1972-1974. He served as Chairman of the Ohio Council for Vocational Education from 1984-1985 and he was the Past President of Forest Hills Country Club.
Glenn became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in 1948 and immediately became advisor to the church youth group Tuxis. He later served as Deacon, Elder, and Trustee. After retiring from Armco steel , he worked as the Director for the Middletown Area Senior Citizens Center.
He is survived by his son, Ronald David Selby of Middletown; a daughter, Beverly ( Meredith) Peters of Salem, In.; a brother, Robert (Betty) Selby of Middletown;two granddaughters, Julie (Vernie) Narvell of Medina, Oh., and Jennifer Peters of Titusville, Florida; and one great granddaughter, Lexington Narvell of Medina.
Glenn was preceded in death by his wife Betty Selby in June of 2001; his parents; a brother, Tom Selby; and a sister, Betty Robillard.
A Memorial Service will held on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002 at 11a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church here in Middletown, with Reverend Tom Ramsey officiating. Entombment will be in Woodside Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the church following the Memorial Service.
