Herbert 'Bud' Lawson

Herbert H. “Bud” Lawson, 79, of Middletown, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at his residence. He was born in Elmwood Place, Ohio on September 30, 1926 to Horace L. and Anna Gertrude (Knapp) Lawson.

After graduating from Middletown High School at the age of 17, Bud enlisted in the USAAF Reserve for flight training. He was placed in the Air Force Army Specialized Training Reserve Program, attending engineering classes at the University of Dayton and the University of Indiana. He was called into active duty and qualified for flight training. Bud began his career at Armco Research in 1946, advancing through various technical and managerial positions until he was named manager of Chemical Technology. While working, Bud attended the University of Cincinnati and Miami University, attaining his BS and MA degrees. Bud´s expertise was in atmospheric corrosion, failure analysis, materials recommendations, and corrosion evaluations. He investigated corrosion problems in Europe and the Middle East. He has patents in the field of metallic coatings, published over 40 papers on corrosion, a book on atmospheric corrosion testing, and presented papers or chaired symposia at international conferences. He was active in various technical societies including the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and the Institute of Corrosion in the UK. He served two terms as Director of NACE International, and was elected President of that organization in 1983. Bud received numerous awards for outstanding service to NACE. He was accredited Corrosion Specialist and a Registered Professional Corrosion Engineer. Bud was elected a Fellow in the Institution of Corrosion Science and Engineering in 1984, a Fellow in ASTM International in 1989, and a Fellow in NACE International in 1993. Following his retirement from Armco in 1990, Bud started a consulting business, which he operated until 2002. Bud avidly pursued music as a hobby throughout his life, playing piano in local bands and combos in the area, and was a member of the Miami University Campus Owls, an alumni dance orchestra. Bud was active in the Boy Scouts of America and the Mound Builders Council. He was a member of St. Mary´s and Holy Family Parishes.

Bud is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy (Fiessinger) Lawson; five children: Keith (Vicki) Lawson of Middletown, Kevin (Mary) Lawson of Red Oak, IA, Kraig (Diana) Lawson of Cincinnati, Wendy Ann (Michael) Sorrell of Middletown, and Kurt (Leigh Anne) Lawson of Logan; sister, Ruth (Arlie) Vaughn of Middletown; brothers, Dan Lawson of Abilene, TX and Gregory (Jane) Lawson of White City, FL; 14 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, July 29, 2006 at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Parish - Holy Trinity Church with Father John Civille as celebrant. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. (at Bonita Dr.) Middletown. Entombment will be at Woodside Cemetery Mausoleum with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 218 Honor Guard.
