Herbert J. Martin, 94, of Trenton, died Sunday, January 29, 2012, at his home. He was born in Lemon Township on August 2, 1917 to parents Herbert L. and Rose (Beck) Martin.
Herbert was a longtime farmer in Butler County and life-member of the Farm Bureau. He was a veteran of the Army Air Force, serving as a flight engineer during World War II. He founded Martin Excavating in 1954. He loved to tinker in his shop, modifying tools for his work and improving ordinary items that were part of his daily life.
Mr. Martin is survived by his daughter, Marcia (Steve) Markham; son, Greg (Becky) Martin; brothers, Raymond (Dorothy) Martin & Thomas (Carolyn) Martin; sister, Mildred (John) Sheller; six grandchildren, Stephanie (Sam) Minge, Angela Markham, Tracy (Brett) Kraft, Megan (Matt) Cyr, Susan (Paul) Budnick & Mallory (Ben) Williams; and four great grandchildren, Lauren Baker, Abby Cyr, Lily Cyr & Bryce Kraft.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn (Poff) Martin in 2003; parents; & brother, Fred Martin.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Herbert's caregiver, Sarah Grubb and to Vitas Hospice for their care.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 10:00 am at Holy Name Catholic Church, 222 Hamilton Ave., Trenton with Father Thomas H. McCarthy as celebrant. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown, OH. Interment will be at Miltonville Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Middletown Combined Honor Guard.
