Long-time music teacher and Middletown resident from 1951 to 2006, Hilda Cory Wearly died Wednesday, August 17, 2011 in Chillicothe. She was a resident of Traditions of Chillicothe Assisted Living facility since October of 2006.
She was born June 5, 1917 in Frankfort, Ohio, the daughter of Reed L. & Ina (Coyner) Cory. Demonstrating a great love of music, her mother began giving her piano lessons at the age of 5. She graduated from Frankfort High School in 1935 and was a 1939 graduate of Capital University in Columbus with a degree in music education. She began her teaching career in the Wayne Township Schools in Lees Creek, Ohio. She subsequently taught at Sycamore and Madeira High Schools beginning in 1943. After moving to Middletown, she taught in the Trenton school system before joining the staff at the then new Amanda Junior High at its opening in 1959. She taught at Amanda until her retirement in 1974. Mrs. Wearly was noted for her enthusiasm in teaching junior high music and was proud of the accomplishments of her students. She routinely rewrote music to accommodate changing voices and consequently enjoyed having large numbers of students participating in her choirs, often ranging from 100 - 150 students. During her career she was a member of local, state and national music organizations. She was a member of Forest Hills Country Club for 40 years. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she was active in the quilting and walking groups and sang in the senior choir. She also played for sing-a-longs at the Doty House.
Mrs. Wearly was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Wearly, whom she married on August 16, 1942; her parents; two brothers, Reed H. Cory & John M. Cory; and two sisters, Isabel Cory & June Cory Fisher.
She is survived by a daughter, Janice (Mark) Evans of Romeo, Michigan; son, Robert Reed of Middletown; special niece, Jenny Proehl of Chillicothe; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; nine nephews; and eleven other nieces.
