Irmgard Maria Szabo, 78, of Middletown, died Thursday, February 19, 2015, at her daughter's residence. She was born in Ziegenhals, Germany on August 31, 1936 to parents Joseph and Hedwig (Willmann) Kirchner. She immigrated to the USA in 1961 with her husband & daughter, Ildiko several years after fleeing communist East Germany with her sister, Gertrud.
Irmgard worked for AK Steel for 17 years, retiring in 2002. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Sons of Italy & Church Women United and volunteered at the Church of the Ascension Clothing Depot and at the polls on Election days. She was an avid bocce player at Holy Trinity and also enjoyed gardening, walking, swimming, biking & attending performances of the symphony & opera. She loved walking her beloved dog "Twiggy" at Smith Park.
Mrs. Szabo is survived by her children, Ildiko (Ronald) Sherman, Andrew (Sandra) Szabo, Sandor (Karen) Szabo & Anthony Szabo; sisters, Gertrud (Urbano) Casagrande & Helga (Josef) Thiele; grandchildren, Sarah Hoskins, Elden Hoskins, Alexandra Hoskins, Crystal Szabo, Molly Szabo, Logan Szabo, Erin Szabo, Ali Szabo, Abby Szabo & Aubrey Szabo; and great grandchildren, James, Jonah, Cleopatra, Violet, Vincent, Olivia & Rylan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gyula Szabo in 1971; parents; and grandson, Alexander Grant Szabo.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 10:00 am at Holy Family Parish - St. John's Church, 1405 First Avenue, Middletown with Father John Civille as celebrant. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery.
