James D. Shumate, 78, of Trenton, died Monday, May 22, 2006, at Middletown Regional Hospital. He was born in Middletown, on January 16, 1928 to Edward and Ethel (Long) Shumate.
Jim worked for Armco Steel Corporation, retiring as a foreman after 42 years of service. He played for Armco Industrial League in both softball and basketball, and also the Armco War Vets football team. He served his country in the United States Navy during Korea and was a member of the American Legion Post 218, where he cooked for many of their events. He was a member of Holy Family Parish - St. John´s Church and worked at St. John´s Bingo for several years.
Mr. Shumate is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Ann (Lawrence) King of Trenton; two sons, David T. Shumate and Jeffrey S. Shumate, both of Trenton; three sisters, Dorothy (Donald) Cole of Hamilton, Winnie (Mac) McPherson of Spring Valley, CA, and Mary (Jack) Villalpando of Alpine, CA; three brothers, William (Jenny) Shumate of Monroe, Arthur Shumate and Richard (Lillian) Shumate, both of Middletown; three granddaughters, Krista M. King, Erica L. King, and Anna K. King, all of Trenton; and mother-in-law, Anna Henning of Trenton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Shumate in 2004; his parents; brothers, Edward Shumate and Jack Shumate; and sister, Jean Shumate.
A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, May 25, 2006 at 12:00 NOON at Holy Family Parish - St. John's Church with Monsignor Paul Metzger as celebrant. There will be no visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cole Center for Healing, c/o Jim Shumate at Chase Bank, 2400 N. Verity Pkwy., Middletown, OH 45042
