James George

Mr. James George, 74, passed into the arms of Jesus, Sunday morning, January 26, 2003 at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village, after being a resident there for 3 months. He was born in Middletown on December 10, 1928 and lived here all of his life.

James was the owner of George Brothers Furniture and Appliances of Middletown for 37 years, retiring in 1998. His store was well known for giving personal service and served many generations of families. He also entertained his customers and school children with his beloved parrot, Joe. In addition to Joe, he loved and cared for many strays and daily fed the birds around his store. He served in the United States Army for 2 years and while serving in the Army was a member of the Signal Corp. One of Jim's most memorable moments was taking his first solo flight at the age of 16; and , as a private pilot, continued his love of flying for the next 35 years. He was also a very avid golfer and a member of the Senior Men's Golf League, being very proud of the fact that at one point, he achieved a hole in one. Jim was a member of Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church.

Mr. George was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Andrew George; his brother, Michael George in 1977; and his sister Angela Sabota in 1997.

Those left to mourn him are his beloved longtime friend and special companion of 25 years, Martha Swank, her family, and numerous friends and acquaintances.

Receiving of friends will take place on Thursday, January 30 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. at Bonita Dr.. Funeral service will take place on Friday, January 31, at 1:00 PM at the funeral home, with Rev. Stan Gockel officiating. Chapel services, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 218 Honor Guard, to follow at Woodside Cemetery.
