John C. Erb, a lifelong Middletonian, was welcomed into our heavenly Father's arms on Tuesday, October 1, 2002. Born to Gardoola (Cochran) and Frederick Erb on April 9, 1907, John lived an active, independent life in our community for 95 years.
John was a marvelous resource for historical researchers. His accurate memory was a delight for many who learned of loved ones lives through his stories. He was often consulted for articles in the Middletown Journal and was a personal friend of George Crout and Roger Miller. John's recollections of events such as the 1913 flood and the trains in West Middletown, brought to life stories of days past.
A devoted Christian, John lived a simple life, worshipping and serving our Lord in many ways, to include treasurer for First United Methodist Church.
John advocated for the environment as well as the less fortunate. He was a member of Jefferson Lodge #90 F&AM, and a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, 32nd degree Mason. He was a proud Democrat, and a member of Middletown Area Senior Citizens.
John worked for Ogelsby-Barnitz Bank throughout his career. Following his retirement, he worked for Bank One as a courier. His quiet, positive demeanor brought many generations of bank customers and employees into his circle of friends.
John will be missed by his dinner companions of Middletown Regional Hospital, his many special friends, numerous cousins and extended family members.
A service to celebrate his life will be held Thursday, October 3, 2002, at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, 120 S. Broad Street, Middletown, with Pastor David Chivington officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, from 12:30 - 1:30 PM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. at Bonita. Masonic services will be conducted by Jefferson Lodge #90 at 1:00 PM.
