Died May 25, 2003 in Middletown, Ohio, where he was born on March 6, 1922, the son of David and Ruth (Unzicker) Whitehurst. Mr. Whitehurst was a graduate of the Business College of the Ohio State University. There he held the offices of Treasurer and President of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and President of both the Ohio State’s Council of Fraternity Presidents and the Fraternity Managers’ Association. He held a Masters Degree in Finance from Miami University (Ohio) and a degree in Financial Management from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He was a Alumnus of Culver Military Academy’s Naval School, Culver, Indiana.
Mr. Whitehurst was a company commander with company C, 63rd Infantry, 6th Division, in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, serving in Luzon, Philippine Islands, and Korea. At the conclusion of the war, he was assigned to the Army of Occupation, where he was appointed Military Governor of South Cholla Pukto Province, Korea.
His business career began with U.S. Steel in Gary, Indiana, followed by 34 years with Armco Steel in Middletown. He was Executive Vice President of Armco Investment Management, Inc., Secretary of the Armco, Inc. Asset Review Board, President of Kensington Associates, a Fellow of the International Financial Analysts Society and a member of Mensa International. Upon retirement he became a full time Faculty Member of the School of Business Administration of Miami University. Mr. Whitehurst served on their Student Advisory Committee for twelve years.
As a former member of the First Presbyterian Church, Middletown, he served as Deacon, Elder, Trustee, and Sunday School Teacher. Later, he joined the Indian Hill (Ohio) Episcopal Church. Mr. Whitehurst developed and served as President of Springwood, Inc. and was a founder of the Romans in Cincinnati. He was a member of the Duveneck Society of the Cincinnati Art Museum. Mr. Whitehurst was an avid history enthusiast, while his foremost commitment was to his family.
Surviving Mr. Whitehurst are his wife, Louise (Murbach) Whitehurst, whom he married November 14, 1944, in Middletown and three children and their families, John, Middletown, Ohio; T. Jeffrey, his wife, Ruth (Cash) Whitehurst, Megan and Sarah Whitehurst, Austin, Texas; Cynthia Ann, her husband, Dr. Kevin Gill, Allison and Jonathan Gill, Dallas, Texas.
Funeral arrangements will be at the convenience of the family at the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. Memorial gifts, if so desired, may be made to the Mayo Clinic Neurological Department for research on Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Rochester, Minnesota, or the Cincinnati Art Museum.
