Joseph E. 'Papa Joe' Peters, 88, of Middletown, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at Atrium Medical Center. He was born in Middletown, on March 7, 1920, to parents Joseph Edward Peters Sr. and Florence Elizabeth (McDonald) Peters.

Joe graduated from Middletown High School, Class of 1938. He was secretary of his class, played varsity football, and was a member of Hi-Y and M Club. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II, serving in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a Sergeant First Class and earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 5 bronze stars and a World War II Victory Medal. Following his discharge, he married Beatrice Johnson on October 29, 1949. He worked as a maintenance supervisor for Gardner Paper Company (Diamond International) for 43 years, retiring in 1982. Joe was an avid photographer and repaired cameras for Davidson's Photo Shop for 20 years. He was a talented artist and many of his drawings are showcased throughout family member's homes. He was baptized into Christ at the age of 14 and attended Crosspointe Church of Christ.

Mr. Peters is survived by his wife of 59 years, Beatrice Johnson Peters; son, David Joseph (Cheryl) Peters; daughter, Beverly Joan (Paul) Renwick; grandsons, Branden Joseph Renwick and David Joseph 'Joey' Peters Jr.; great grandson, Dylan Joseph Renwick; and Jonas Huffman, whom he loved like a grandson; a dear cousin, Sara (Paul) Galeese; brothers-in-law, Kenneth (Amanda) Johnson, Everett (Mary) Johnson and Craig Johnson; and several nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Ellen (William) Long; mother-in-law, Louise Johnson; and sister-in-law, Wanda Coyle.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with interment at Woodside Cemetery.
