Joseph Leonard Dakin died on June 16, 2008 at the age of 66 after a four year battle with cancer. Born in Middletown on July 13, 1941, Joe was raised in Middletown and attended Fenwick High School. Joe enlisted in the Navy and retired in 1980 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service. He proudly served on the John F. Kennedy Aircraft Carrier and the Coontz Destroyer and received three good conduct medals, a Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, a Navy Expeditionary Medal, and Meritorious Unit Commendation. After retiring from the Navy, Joe worked at Sorg Paper and retired from Franklin Boxboard in 2004. Joe enjoyed restoring cars, camping, and was passionate about Corvettes. Joining God before him, parents Joseph F. and Marguerite (Powers) Dakin, beloved sister, Katherine Dakin, and niece, Donna Dakin. He will forever be carried in the hearts of his wife of 37 years, Carol (Schuyler) Dakin, two children, Tony (Michele) Dakin and Chrissy (Jason) Staggs, two brothers, Gerald (Marilyn) Dakin and Fred (Barbara) Dakin, 11 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and many other cherished friends and family. "Candyman" inspired many in the AA community and was an integral member of the Central and Alano Clubs. He leaves behind a legacy of touching countless lives through the love he showed others one day at a time. Friends may call from 5 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at WILSON-SCHRAMM-SPAULDING FUNERAL HOME, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. (at Bonita Dr.) with a funeral service immediately following at 7 p.m. with Chaplain Ruthanne Niehaus and Rev. Chuck Wolfinbarger officiating. A dinner celebration will be provided at the Vineyard Community Church (Franklin) immediately following funeral services. At Joe's request, he will be cremated and his ashes scattered at sea. Memorial contributions can be made to the Central Club of Middletown or the Vineyard Community Church of Franklin.
