Joseph N. "Red" Hughes, 87, of Middletown, died Sunday, March 10, 2013, at home. He was born in Pomeroyton, Kentucky on April 24, 1925 to parents Joseph N. and Mattie (Brown) Hughes Sr.
Red worked in the Open Hearth at Armco Steel for 25 years, retiring in 1978. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post 218, the Loyal Order of Moose #501 and the Middletown Area Senior Citizens Center. Red was inducted into the Butler County Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in 1995. He was also an avid golfer, having achieved four hole-in-one's.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his daughter, Linda (Tom) Gibson; grandchildren, Nikki Gibson, Tricia Gibson, Christina Gibson & Joe (Lindsey) Gibson; great grandchildren, Shaun, Brandon, Noah & Katilyn; great great grandchild, Braylon; many nieces & nephews, including special niece Vickie (Nuz) Selby and special friend, Whitey Huff.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah M. Hughes in 2003; parents; sisters, Emma Sabo, Bernice Jones, India Wells, Loretta Marstall & Betty Hughes; and brothers, Whisard Hughes, Grant Hughes, Chalmer Hughes & Finley Hughes.
Funeral Service will be held Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown with Reverend Kenneth Fey officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 1:00 - 2:00 pm. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Middletown Area Senior Citizens, 3907 Central Ave., Middletown, Ohio 45044.
