Joseph W. Haines

Joseph W. Haines, 95, went to be with our Lord on January 20, 2017. He was born in Uniontown, PA to D. Ray Haines and Elizabeth McPhail-Haines.

Joe established Haines Adjusting Company in Middletown, Ohio, which served the region for over 50 years. Throughout his years in business he served as President of the Ohio Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters as well as the Butler Co. Claims Association. He was a 33 Degree Mason and a member of the Middletown Rotary Club. As a Rotarian, he served many years as treasurer, was a Paul Harris Fellow and awarded the 40 year perfect attendance pin. Joe was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, Elder and Trustee. He contributed many hours of service to his local community and service organizations. When called to serve his country in WWII – he did as all good men of that era did and proudly went into the Army. While in basic training, Joe was identified as a man who easily learned languages. He quickly learned basic Chinese and Hindi and was then sent to the China-Burma-India Theater in the Pacific. He first worked as an Army Liaison, flying over the treacherous Himalayan Mountains ("The Hump") numerous times. Next, Joe was embedded in the Chinese Army and given a Chinese rank of Colonel. He trained and led Chinese troops to clear the enemy from the area so that the strategic Ledo Road could be constructed. It was during his years in the Army that he became fluent in Chinese and Hindi. For his service to the Chinese, he was awarded the Medal of Valor by The Peoples Republic of Taiwan. Most recently, he was interviewed by main land China's equivalent to the History Channel. The resulting documentary titled "My Chinese Acquaintances", let generations of Chinese learn that America was their ally during WWII. During retirement, Joe and his wife, Jane, enjoyed traveling the US in their Airstream, playing golf and residing at Traveler's Rest in Dade City, Florida. It was there that Joe's love of creating stained glass and performing in musicals was nurtured. Joe volunteered to head the Snack Shack and enjoyed many good friends and good times at "TR".

He is survived by his wife Jane L. Haines (married 64 yrs) son, Bruce J. (Lisa) Haines, daughter Robin (Kevin) Hake, grandsons Benjamin (Jessica) Haines, William (Casey) Haines, Colin Hake and Carson Hake and Granddaughters Elizabeth (Justin) Perkins and Katherine Hake, and 7 Great Grandchildren.

A Graveside Service will be held Friday, Jan 27 at 11:00 am at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Madison Township with Chaplain Dennis Jones officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 3229 Burnett Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229 or the charity of your choice.
