Joyce J. Johnston, 76, of Monroe, died on August 7, 2003, at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born in Buffalo, New York on April 23, 1927 to parents Tracey L. and Lillian Emily (Rich) Johnson.
Joyce graduated from Bethlehem Central High School, in Delmar, New York, in 1945. She attended Oberlin College in Northern Ohio where she met her husband, A. Seth Johnston. She graduated from Oberlin in 1949 with a degree in history.
She and Seth married on June 9, 1951 and moved to Columbus, Ohio where Seth was a student at Ohio State University. In 1955, they settled in Monroe and raised their four children.
Joyce worked as an office manager for Agricultural Land Consultants for the last 20 years. However, her true passion related back to her study of history as she developed expertise in the field of early American anitque pressed glass. This passion led her to become the owner of Johnston´s Anitques. She wrote several articles for trade magazines and became recognized as an authority in the field of antique pressed glass.
She was a charter member of the DR Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was also a member of the Early American Pressed Glass Society, the Lemon Hill Chapter of Questors International and the Middletown First Presbyterian Church.
Joyce is survived by her husband, A. Seth Johnston; two daughters, Lori Hamlin, and husband Dan, of Alexandria, VA, and Jennifer Johnston, and husband Joe Arriaga, of Wethersfield, CT; two sons, Tom Johnston, and wife Janis, of Mt. Airy, MD, and James Johnston, and wife Kristen, of Gaithersburg, MD. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren who will miss her love and encouragement.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, August 11, 2003 at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 2910 Central Ave., Middletown, with Reverend Karen Haak and Reverend Tom Ramsey officiating. There will be no visitation. Interment will be at Mound Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to Monroe Historical Society, 10 E. Elm St., Monroe, Ohio 45050 - or - First Presbyterian Church, 2910 Central Ave., Middletown, Ohio 45044.
