Margaret Annis Bissell, 100, was born on May 20, 1911 in Mansfield, Ohio. She was the daughter of Mary Alice (McDaniel) and Herbert Sweet Bissell.
In 1932 Margaret graduated from the Miami Valley School of Nursing in Dayton, Ohio. She achieved the rank of Captain while serving during World War II from 1942-1946. She was a nurse in the Army Nurses Corps, 9th General Hospital and was stationed on the Island of Biak (northwest of New Guinea) when it was bombed by the Japanese in 1944. She also participated in the liberation of the Philippines during that time. Margaret was awarded the Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal.
In 1947 she received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Dayton and in 1948 a Masters of Nursing from Columbia University. Shortly thereafter she moved to Rocky Hill, CT and retired in 1976 as Assistant Director of Nursing at the Hartford Hospital. During her years in Connecticut she served as Medical History Nurse for the Red Cross Blood Mobile Unit and as a deacon of the South Congregational Church in Hartford. In 1987 she moved to Mount Pleasant Village in Monroe, OH where she resided until her death. Throughout her life, Margaret enjoyed traveling, camping, community service, church membership and was an active volunteer at Mount Pleasant for many years
She was preceded in death by her parents; a half-brother, Robert, a half-sister, Laura; and two brothers, Herbert & Richard.
