Margaret Brenneman, 89, of Monroe, died Friday, February 6, 2009, at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. She was born in Avalon, Pennsylvania on March 30, 1919 to parents Alva and Bertha (Lay) Hooker.
Margaret graduated from Grove City College and later obtained a masters in history from the University of Syracuse. While at Grove City she met her future husband, Lyman Brenneman, and the two were married on Sept 15, 1945. During World War II Margaret taught school until the war ended. Around 1947 she and Lyman moved to Connecticut when he took a job with General Electric. In 1957 they moved to Ohio when he took the position of assistant director of buildings at Miami University. Besides raising her family, Margaret worked part-time for Miami University in various capacities. She taught history a few years at Western College for Women before it merged with Miami and occasionally took classes herself at Miami. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of College Corner and later of Monroe Presbyterian Church and was a dedicated member of the D.A.R. For many years, she was an active member of COSEP, an organization to assist foreign students at Miami University. She and Lyman were host family to many students from Africa and Asia and Margaret taught English to the students' spouses. In 1993 they moved to Mount Pleasant Retirement Village.
Mrs. Brenneman is survived by her daughter, Carol Kemp; son, Dr. Wayne (Nancy) Brenneman; and two granddaughters, Kathy (Eric) Richardson and Laura Brenneman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyman C. Brenneman in 2008.
Interment will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Lima, New York. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Monroe Presbyterian Church, 57 W. Elm Street, Monroe with Reverend Pat Warren officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to Monroe Presbyterian Church.
