Martha R. Shaffer

Martha R. (Brown) Shaffer, 86, of, Middletown, passed away Sunday, October 19, 2014, at Atrium Medical Center. She was born in Spencer County, Kentucky on October 12, 1928 to parents William Goebel and Corinne (Hughes) Brown.

She was preceded in death by her husband Everett Shaffer. She is survived by her beloved Jackson; brother, Horace (Elizabeth) Brown; nieces, Leslie (Butch) McBride & Christy Brown; nephews, Todd (Heather) Brown, Lloyd (Kim) Brown, John (Kristin) Brown, Seth Brown; Iris' daughter, Megan (Greg) Crabb and Iris' son, DeWitt (Jessica) Snyder, and their families. Martha is also survived by her sons, Charles (Carolyn) Woods and Robert (Shirley) Woods; nine grandchildren, Steve (Tammy) Woods, Susan (Kirt) Hartzler, Shelly (Kurt) Kindred, Audra (Xaxier) Mireles, Jenny Woods, Doug Woods, Amy Richissin, Brian Mullins and Steve Mullins; and many great grandchildren.

Martha & Everett enjoyed many things, traveling to Alaska, numerous golfing trips, and just enjoying their mutual friendships they had acquired. She is also survived by Eleanor Pauley (sister to Everett) and Carol Ewing a niece and Doug (Susan) Pauley and their children.

Martha and husband Roy Woods, who preceded her in death, spent many years traveling, golfing, and boating, including chartering a sailboat to the Bahamas. Before retiring from Franklin City Schools in 1984, Martha taught school in Simpsonville, Kentucky for five years while attending Eastern Kentucky University. Martha moved to Ohio and taught school while continuing her education and graduating from Wright State University. Martha (Miller) taught at Franklin City Elementary Schools for 35 plus years. Martha was a member of the Forest Hills Country Club and for many years (she was an avid gardener) she, along with her friend Wilma, were the caretakers of the flower gardens at the club. Martha was also a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Middletown.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 12:00 Noon at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 - 12:00 pm.
