Mary Elizabeth "Tootsie" Henning, 84, of Middletown, entered Heaven on Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Atrium Medical Center with her five children and extended family by her side. Mary was born in Hamilton, Ohio on October 27, 1927, the daughter of Elbert and Frankie Mae (Stout) Peck. Her family was very prominent in the Hamilton/Fairfield area, with Pecks Addition and Michael Lane being named after them.
She attended St. Stephen's grade school and graduated from Fairfield High, where she was proud to say she was a Fairfield cheerleader. She later studied nursing at Miami University. On August 17, 1946, Tootsie was married to her husband of 52 years, Tweed Henning, at St. John's Church. She was a devoted wife and proud mother of five children. Tootsie stayed involved in her children and grandchildren's lives. She spent her younger years as president of the Holy Trinity P.T.A., she was a Girl Scout leader and lunch server for Holy Trinity children for over 10 years. In later years her life became her grandchildren spending the night, vacations to Myrtle Beach and grandma's Sunday dinners. Mary was known for her famous Christmas cinnamon rolls. Tootsie was an excellent bowler who broke many records in women's bowling and attended many State Championships where she placed high rankings. She loved her bingo, played 28 cards and was very lucky. Tootsie was a great dancer and her and Tweed were the best when it came to the jitterbug.
Mary is survived by her daughters Charlean Henning and husband Michael Armitage of Middletown and Nannette Henning and husband Michael Manning of South Carolina; sons Phillip Henning, Roderick and wife Kathy Henning and Regan Henning, all of Middletown; grandchildren, Missy Armitage and husband Dave Reed, Mindy Armitage and husband Nick Rose, Neely Henning and husband Nathan Wilson, and granddaughter-in-law Aimee Manning all of Middletown, Tweed and Martin Manning of South Carolina, Lacy Henning and husband Reno Land of Virginia, Holly Henning of Hamilton and Rod Henning of Middletown. She is the great grandmother of Michael and wife Tabatha Green, Brad Green, Lela and Stuart Manning, Phillip and Brady Wilson and Taylor Land. Also many nieces and nephews that she loved very much and sister-in-law Cookie Henning.
Mary was welcomed in Heaven by her husband, Tweed Henning; parents Elbert and Frankie Mae Peck; brothers, John Chitwood and Mike Peck; sister, Francis Heighton; brother-in-law and bingo buddy Willy Henning; and grandson Joe Michael Manning.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Parish - Holy Trinity Church, 201 Clark Street, Middletown with Father John Civille as celebrant, with family gathering at the funeral home at 10:00 am. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery.
