Norbert H. Frey

Norbert H. Frey, 89, of Middletown, died Friday, January 24, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Cincinnati on December 13, 1913 to parents Harry and Cecelia (Lutter) Frey.

Norbert was raised in Fairmont, a section of old Cincinnati, attended St. Bonaventura School and was a graduate of Roger Bacon High School in 1932. Early in his career, he was first a clerk and then manager with Kroger Stores in Cincinnati, most notably the then modern store at Pebbles Corner in Walnut Hills. In 1944, he assumed the manager position of the Kroger Store on Verity Parkway in Middletown. From 1944 to 1956, Norbert owned independent food markets in Middletown, first a store on South Main Street next to the Sorg Theater and later, stores in other parts of the city. In 1956, he was appointed as bailiff to Judge J.T. Lamb's municipal court, a postition he held for almost 30 years. Middletown Citizens will remember him as the community's link to the court.

Norbert was an active member of Holy Family Parish - St. John's Church for 60 years. Always interested in current events, he read two newspapers each day and always tuned to news programs on radio first, then later on television. He will always be remembered as a loving and generous man to all who knew him.

Mr. Frey is survived by his two children, Marilyn R. (Michael) Abell of Middletown and David (Francis) Frey, a retired professor now living in Mexico. Also surviving him are his seven grandchildren, Betsy Rossi, Todd Abell, and Ann (James) Frey Mott all of Middletown, Mary Lynne (Jeffrey) Bierman of Mainville, Jeffrey (Melissa) Abell of Tennessee, and Joseph Frey and Tony (Tatiana) Frey both of California; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Anna Mary (Mann) Frey in 1993; his parents; and one brother, Harold Frey.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, January 30, 2003 at 10:30 AM at Holy Family Parish-St. John's Church with Father John Civille as celebrant. Visitation will be prior to Mass from 8:30 - 10:00 AM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. at Bonita Dr. Entombment will be in St. Joseph (old) Mausoleum in Cincinnati.
