Omer Creech, 90, of Monroe, went home to be with the Lord on September 7, 2010. He was born in Wolfe County, Kentucky, on April 11, 1920 to parents Liberty and Pearl (Miller) Creech.
Omer joined the Marine Corps in 1941, serving from 1941-1947, during World War II, as a member of the 4th Marine Division. He defended his country in the Pacific Theatre, fighting in the Marshall Islands and on Iwo Jima. In his last two years of service, he was a Sergeant Drill Instructor at Paris Island, South Carolina.
Omer drilled oil wells in Kentucky and water wells in Ohio. He also worked at U.S. Steel Mill in Gary, Indiana for nine years (1948-1956). From 1958 – the 1980's, he worked as an independent trucker, hauling steel from Armco Steel Corp until he retired.
Omer always enjoyed working on his trucks and cars, anything mechanical; and he liked fishing with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sarah (Gibson) Creech; son, Donald (Marianne) Creech; daughters, Linda Gayle Gillespie, Deborah (Norbert) Schunk, Sheila McDonough and Oma (Harold) Bowman; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 1 great great granddaughter. He is also survived by a brother, James (Imogene) Creech and a sister, Betty Taylor, both of Seymour, Indiana; brother-in-law, Jack Roberts of Stanton, Kentucky; sisters-in-law, Nellie (Gibson) Hodge of Centerville, Hazel, Rose and Dorothy, all of North Vernon, Indiana; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 6 brothers, Forest, Estill, Ernest, Charlie, Reece and Clyde; and 2 sisters, Leona (Creech) Roberts and infant sister, Juanita.
Omer and Sarah have been members of University Baptist Church in Middletown for 31 years. The family would like to thank the Pastors Deglow, Norris and McKinney and the church family for all the prayers, cards and visits. Many thanks also to Omer's doctors, the loving staff of Hospice of Butler & Warren Counties, all family members and friends for their care, help and prayers during Omer's illness. A special thanks to cousin Russell Terrill, Pastor Norris and Reverend Bill Jullian, who were with Omer in visits and prayers at the hospital and Hospice.
Funeral Service will be held Friday, September 10, 2010 at 11:00 am at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00 am at the funeral home. Interment will be at Butler County Memorial Park with military honors conducted by the Middletown Combined Honor Guard.
