Phyllis Ann Booth Deger, 82, of Middletown died Friday, August 19, 2005 at Willow Knoll Extended Care. She was born in Sharonville, Ohio on April 19, 1923 to parents Amandus and Edith (Rittger) Grau.
Phyllis is survived by her husband Paul R. Deger, Daughter Maureen (Michael) McConnell, sons Jeffery (Susan) Booth of Cincinnati, and Richard (Jennifer) Booth of Denver, CO, step-son David (Bonnie) Deger of Cincinnati, step-daughters Deborah Landon of Largo, FL, and Diane Deger of Boerne, TX.
Sister-in-law Joyce Grau of Southern Pines, NC, brother in law Bob Booth of Cincinnati, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, and 1 step-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Jack Booth, a sister Silvia (William) Powers, infant twins Robert & Lois Grau, and a brother James (Rheva) Grau
Phyllis attended St. Michael’s Elementary School, then graduated first in her class from Sharon High School (Princeton High School). She graduated first in her class from both Christ Hospital School of Nursing and Ohio State Graduate School. She was involved in many activities in school including; Dramatics, debate, yearbook, cheerleading, basketball, and more. She also attended Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and played seven musical instruments and sang in many Cincinnati Churches.
Phyllis was a First Lt. RN to the US Army Medical Corps. And worked for two years at Nicholas General Hospital in Louisville, Ky caring for injured military personnel returning from WWII. Phyllis and her first husband, Jack Booth, lived in Whitehall, Oh and Bellefontaine Ohio, Ocean, Ny, Ft. Lauderdale, Fl., and Hyde Park, Oh, before Moving to Middletown in 1958. Since Phyllis was a nurse and Jack was a pharmacist, they were urged to open a drug store, and in 1966 they opened Booth Drugs as an anchor store in the Highview Center on Central Ave., after retirement, she turned the store over to her son Jeffery. Phyllis and her second husband Paul enjoyed traveling and dancing.
Phyllis was a Cub Scout Den mother, a member of Forest Hills Country Club, Wildwood Golf Course, and Browns Run Country Club. She was an outstanding golfer and started the annual Middletown women’s golf tournament and won the first one. She was recognized as the first lady golfer in Middletown to make a hole in one on Wildwood hole # 2. She also enjoyed speed reading and bridge.
Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 22, 2005 at 1:00 pm, Fr. Charles Mentrup officiating. Visitation will be 1hour prior to the service from 12 noon until time of the service. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the nurses & aides of Willow Knoll & Hospice who gave special care to Phyllis.
