Phyllis S. Wacker, 89, a 40-year resident of Middletown, died Friday October 15, 2004 at Otterbein Lebanon Retirement Community. She was born in Lancaster, Ohio on January 4, 1915 to parents Chester Lee and Georgia Sharp. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Norbert P. Wacker in 1988. She is survived by two sons, John L. and James E. Wacker, two daughters, Nancy L. Johnson and Diana L. (Wayne) Overholts; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A 50 plus year veteran of a wide variety of Christian education programs, she dedicated her life to ministry and serving others. A pioneer with her husband, they worked in mountain missions at Henderson Settlement in Kentucky and inner city mission work, serving 4 inner city churches. Together they found the Neighborhood program at First United Methodist Church. A consecrated lay worker and diaconal minister with the United Methodist Church she was a Christian Education Director at several churches in Middletown including, First United Methodist, Church of the Ascension, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and Christ United Methodist from which she retired in 1988.
She was a member of the Middletown Regional Hospital Auxiliary. In 15 years, she volunteered over 6000 hours at the hospital and Well Child Clinic.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to those special friends, nurses and aides that went beyond the call to bring smiles, comfort and assistance.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday October 20, 2004 at Otterbein Lebanon Retirement Community at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Jim Ludwick officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Otterbein Benevolence Fund, 580 N. State Rt. 741, Lebanon, OH 45036 or a charity of you choice.
