Robert H. Akers, 82, of Monroe, died Friday, May 12, 2006, at his residence. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 9, 1924 to parents Herbert and Ruth (Hayford) Akers.
In 1949, Mr. Akers earned his bachelor´s of science in civil engineering from University of Cincinnati, where he was a member of the Triangle fraternity. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Europe during World War II. He worked for Armco Steel Corporation for 35 years and was active in the community. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Middletown where he served as an elder, volunteered delivering Meals-On-Wheels for Middletown Regional Hospital, served as a board member for PARACHUTE of Butler County, and he co-chaired the Mt. Pleasant auctions with his wife. Bob’s love for his family was great, as was his love of traveling and his interest in trains.
Mr. Akers is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Dennis) Terry of Cincinnati and Patricia (Scott) Tornquist of Mason City, IA; two sons, Richard (Peggy) Akers of Portland, ME and David (Jean) Akers of West Springfield, MA; six grandchildren, Ann Akers, Diego Akers, Ben Akers, Josephine Akers, Nathan Tornquist, and Matthew Tornquist; and a brother, James (Helen) Akers of Beach Grove, IN.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth (Addison) Akers in 2005; and his parents.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 20, 2006 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 2910 Central Ave., Middletown, with Reverend Tom Ramsey and David Akers officiating.
In lieu of flowers, remember Bob with a pleasant thought, a fond memory, and a smile as the train passes by.
