Roger David South, Jr died peacefully at the age of 57 surrounded by family and friends on July 20, 2014 after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Middletown, OH on January 9, 1957 to Roger and Barbara (Piedel) South. David graduated from Bishop Fenwick High School in 1975 and joined the Middletown fire department at the age of 19. He led a successful career, rising to the rank of training captain at the time of his retirement. He continued to serve his community as a teacher's assistant in the City of Middletown public school system until the time of his death. David graciously donated his time and humor to many local charities including the United Way and the Knights of Columbus. Most importantly he made a lasting positive impact on innumerable individuals as an athletic coach at all levels of competition including his children's youth leagues and as a long time football coach for both Bishop Fenwick and Middletown high schools. He is preceded in death by his father Roger D. South. He is survived by his wife Julie (nee Long) South, sons Christopher (Julie) South, and James (Sharon) South, grandchildren Brooks, Alison, Rowan, and Rachel. He is also survived by his mother Barbara (nee Piedel) South, brother Paul(Sharon)South, and sister Barbara Ann (Greg) Robertson.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 11:30 am at Holy Family Parish - St. John's Church, with Fr. Fathers John Civille and Ed Pratt celebrants. Visitation will be prior to the Mass from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home 3805 Roosevelt Blvd.
