Roy Spicer, 95+, from Franklin peacefully left this world on February 9, 2023. Roy was born on March 24, 1927 in Georges Branch, Breathitt Co., KY, the sixth of thirteen children born to James and Lizzie (Bellamy) Spicer.
Roy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edna Mae (Profitt); parents, James (Lizzie Bellamy) Spicer; his oldest sister, Pearlie (George) Clemons; brothers, Lloyd (Juanita Gross) Spicer, Hargis (Maude Strong) Spicer, Lawrence “Sam” Spicer, Bob (Carmen Osborne) Spicer, Charlie, Willie & Hobert Spicer; sister, Lois Jean (Norman) Vincent. Still living are sisters, Rachael Marie Hudson of Texas & Shirley (Ollie) Strong of Middletown; brother, Earl (Helen Gibson) Spicer of Springboro; and sisters-in-law, Lavada (Begley) Spicer, Thelma (Strong) Spicer & Georgia (Clemons) Spicer, all of Middletown.
Roy is survived by his only son, Marvin “Marty” and his wife, Susan Runyon Little Spicer; grandson, Nathan Little and wife Sarah of Murfreesboro, TN; great-grandchildren, Eleanor and Wesley Little; granddaughter, Mindy Spicer Schrock and husband, Donnie Schrock of Carlisle, Ohio, with great-grandson, Dillon Schrock.
Memories of Roy have to mention the 44 years he was an overhead crane leader at Armco Steel and the parallel career he had with his Standardbred Racehorses, both racing and breeding. The only racehorse buried on his farm is the Stallion-Common Art. He was one of 90 horses in the world who had a time of less than 2 minuets on a mile track as a three-year-old. He ran a time of 1:59 4/5 on the Red Mile in Lexington, KY in 1966. When Roy was not working at Armco, training, racing, breeding horses, hauling hay and grain, or raising tomatoes, you probably found him throwing fast pitch softballs for his Armco Team or at home pitching to Marty.
Never far away was Roy’s Bible. What a wonderful day he is having reunited Up Yonder with Edna in That Great By and By, where he can finally hear God’s great Heavenly Choir. Goodbye Dad. We are thrilled that you are deaf no more and that you are once again with Mom. We love you!
