Russ Nicols, 85, died Saturday at Middletown Regional Hospital. His working career began with the Champion Paper & Fiber Company. He then went with the Aeronca Aircraft Company in Middletown. He later joined the Gardner Board & Carton Company. He retired as owner of the Converse Monument Company. Russ was an avid golfer. His family holds the distinction of holding the longest continuous membership at Forest Hills Country Club, having joined in 1947. Due to his many years of volunteer service, he was often referred to as "Mr. Forest Hills". He served 7 terms, or 21 years, as president. In the 55 years of belonging, he volunteered in one capicity or another in all but two years. He chaired the committee that reconstructed the club's rules and regulations. He researched and published the history of the club. He was then appointed Historian. Because of his expereince he was appointed liaison member to the board of directors, and later recording secretary. Practically ever day, he performed various record keeping and communications necessary to the operations. He was awarded an honorary membership. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Russ is survived by his wife of 65 years Elsie, and a daughter Nicola Lee (David) Thompson. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Bryan (Monica) Thompson, Jeremy Thompson, Meghan Thompson, and 2 great grandchildren Brady Thompson and Zachary Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Audrey (True) Nicols.
Rev. Stu Rammes will officiate the funeral service.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
