Sarah Godfrey Phillips, 74, of Middletown, died Friday, April 2, 2004, at Jewish Hospital. She was born in Kings Mountain, North Carolina on May 26, 1929 to parents Martin Luther and Frances (Brown) Godfrey.
Mrs. Phillips received her BA in Religious Education from Wingate College in Winston Salem and she attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans. She served on numerous boards and commissions, including the historial commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, the executive board of Ohio Baptists, and was the Ohio Alumni President of the New Orleans Baptist Seminary. She was a longtime resident of Middletown, where her husband, Reverend Phillips, is minister of University Baptist Church.
Sarah is survived by her husband Rev. C. Nolan Phillips; a son, Nolan (Molly) Phillips of Newport, WA: two daughters, Saundra (John) Phillips Beckett of Atlanta, GA, and Dana (Jim) Waldrop of Birmingham, AL; one sister, Marian Godfrey of Charlotte, NC; and three grandchildren, Madison Beckett, Kessler Beckett, and Claire Waldrop; as well as many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Dugan and Bud Godfrey.
Funeral Service will be held Monday, April 5, 2004 at 10:00 AM at University Baptist Church, 4125 Riverview Ave., Middletown, with Dr. Don McMurry officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, from 5-9 PM at the church. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery.
