Velma married her high school sweetheart, William Goodman, who preceded her in death. Years later she married Russell Lodes who also preceded her in death. Together Russ and Velma researched, documented, wrote and published the book "The Lodes Family of Colfax County, Nebraska". She was in the process of gathering and compiling information to write a book on her Pressler family ancestry at the time of her illness. Other death predecessors are her grandson, Robert Poplin; parents, William & Cora Pressler; brothers, Bernard and William Pressler Jr.; and sister, Geraldine Armitage.

Velma is survived by her son, William Goodman Jr.; daughter, Vicki Poplin; grandson, Bruce Poplin (Caitlyn Banis); great-grandson, Bobby Poplin; brothers, James (Patricia) Pressler and Ronald (Sherry) Pressler; sister, Dorothy Back; brother-in-law, Dwight Armitage; former sister-in-law, Shirley Hilderbrand; maternal aunt, Betty Pennington; and many other relatives.
