Virgil J. Westercamp, 92, of Monroe, died Thursday, August 18, 2016. He was a resident of Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. He was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa on May 9, 1924 to parents John Albert and Effa Estella (Barkley) Westercamp.
Virgil served his love of God, family, work and country as a caretaker, protector and provider.
Virgil was employed by Armco Steel Corp. for 37 years retiring in 1983 as manager of the finance division. Earlier in his career at Armco, he worked in the drainage and metal products division. He was a graduate of Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa and a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he served on the board of trustees. Virgil served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps as a B-17 bomber pilot during World War II. He was a member of the 508th Squadron of the 351st Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force.
Mr. Westercamp is survived by his daughter, Barbara Stumpf and grandson, Andrew Stumpf.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty Westercamp in 2012 and daughter, Janine Westercamp in 1988
Memorial service will be held Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 11:00 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 212 S. Broad Street, Middletown with Pastor Michelle Terry officiating. Inurnment will be at Woodside Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Middletown Combined Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mt. Pleasant Life Care Fund, 225 Britton Lane, Monroe, OH 45050 or to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 212 S. Broad Street, Middletown, OH 45044.
