Volina W. Dean passed away peacefully in her sleep, the night of September 10, 2013. If you didn't get to meet this rare gem, hopefully you will feel like you did after you have read this. Maybe you knew her as Volina, or Mrs. Dean, but if you knew her, you will never forget her.
She was born January 8, 1921 in a little area called Walkertown outside of Hazard, Kentucky. Walkertown had been established by her family long before she was born. Volina was the youngest daughter of 8 children and lived a farming life until she married. She moved with her husband and daughter to Middletown over 60 years ago. She worked hard to keep her house in a state of perfection, even washing down the outside of her house until she was in the late '80's. She enjoyed her garden and flower beds. Volina's family was always her priority, but her kindness extended beyond her family. Anyone who needed a good meal was sure to receive it. She took countless meals to friends who had sustained a loss, were ill, or could no longer cook for themselves. When a neighbor had sustained the loss of his wife, to assist her with the delivery of the meals, her loving husband built steps over their fence so it was easier to take the neighbor his meals. At Christmas time she would bake and leave a treat for their mailman. During a particularly bad snow, the mailman, in an attempt to deliver the mail, became stuck in the snow. She simply went and got a shovel and dug him out, because that's what she did. She helped anyone who needed it, and never expected, nor wanted, anything in return. Whether she was delivering meals she had prepared or visiting someone for a catch up, she was happy to do it. Volina may have spent hours on the phone with you, because you needed a friendly ear. She may have helped you paint your walls, bake something for a charity bake sale, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly smile, a random gift because she thought you would like it or needed it, or maybe she babysat your children or maybe even you. The one sure thing is Volina lived her life for everyone and made everyone's lives better by just being her.
Volina Dean is survived by her daughter, Mable (husband Gary) Abner, her granddaughter Kathy (husband Richard and daughter Alyssa) France, great granddaughters Christina (husband Lewis, son Phoenix, daughter Jade, son Ronan) Raney, Jessica (husband Brandon) Shouse and countless loving family members too many to list but not forgotten.
Volina has been reunited with her loving husband of 57 years Robert W. Dean, her son John Wesley Dean, daughter Bobbie Jean Dean, father Joe Walker, mother Rhoda Walker, grandson David Abner, and many other family members and friends.
