Wallace B. “Wally” Slone, Sr., 81, of Monroe, Ohio, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at Middletown Regional Hospital. He was born in Middlesboro, Kentucky on November 17, 1921 to parents Benjamin J. and Della Mae (Noe) Slone, Sr..
Wally worked in the slab mill maintenance department of Armco Steel Corp. for 30 years, retiring in 1975. He served his country in the United States Army and the United States Air Force reserves, retiring in 1975 after serving a combined total of 35 years in the military. A veteran of World War II, he had served 39 months overseas in Africa and Europe.
Wally was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America for 55 years, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, with 3 oak leaves. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award and served as a commissioner for the Dan Beard Council. He was a member of Dial Radio Club of Middletown since 1960, and a volunteer advisor with Junior Achievement. Wally was a charter member of Eastview Baptist Church in Franklin.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, William Wallace Schmidt, 6 sisters, and 3 brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Alice (Saylor) Slone; one daughter: Lettie J. (Bill) Schmidt of Yakima, WA; two sons: Wallace B. (Martina) Slone, Jr. of Monroe, OH, and J. Robert (Amy) Slone of Maineville, OH; granddaughters, Susan C. (Brian) Barnes, Heather Lynn (Tandyn) Lippert and Siobhan Slone; grandson, Jon Wallace (Nicole) Slone; and great grandson, Benjamin Wallace Slone.
Funeral Service will be held Friday, May 9, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. at Bonita Dr., with Pastor Dwaine Tilford officiating. Visitation will be Friday, prior to the service from 1-2 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be at Butler County Memorial Park.
