Waltyne B. Goecke Schmitt, 90, of Monroe, died Friday, March 14, 2008, at Atrium Medical Center. She was born in Sumter, South Carolina on October 15, 1917 to Henry and Magdaline (Wells) Brunson.
Waltyne worked as an Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Sorg Paper for 30 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the Deborah Circle at First United Methodist Church and had been active with Junior Achievement a number of years ago.
Mrs. Schmitt is survived by her son, Gene (Lynda) Goecke; three daughters, Susan (fiance Dwight Lauer) Zeiher, Shelley (John) Bidwell, and Sharon (Tom) Brown; a sister, Mattie Barfield of Columbus, Georgia; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Gene Goecke, Sr. in 1970 and James Schmitt; her parents; brothers, Harry and Ebb Brunson; and sister, Magdaline Cheatham.
A Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Parish - Holy Trinity Church with Father Michael Bidwell, Reverend Dean Penrod, and Monsignor Paul Metzger officiating. Visitation will be prior to the mass from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at church.
