William A. "Bill" Harrison, 91, of Monroe, died Saturday, January 10, 2015, at The Woodlands of Middletown from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was born in Middletown on April 14, 1923 to parents William Allan and Edna (Doty) Harrison, being a direct descendant of Daniel Doty & Stephen Vail.
He graduated from Middletown High School. Following graduation he served with the United States Navy for 3 years, being stationed in the South Pacific. When he returned home he went to college at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where he was a member of Signa Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and where he met & married Nancy Price of Charlevoix, Michigan. After college he returned to Middletown and joined the W.T. Harrison Insurance Agency which was later merged with Insurance Associates. He was a trustee and later president of the Ohio Association of Independent Insurance Agents. Bill was very involved with Rotary International, being a member and president of the Middletown club and later served as District Governor. He was active in the community with many organizations & boards - the YMCA, Middfest where he served as president for 2 years, he also served as president of the Historical Society, was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Antioch Shrine, First United Methodist Church and then Monroe United Methodist Church. Bill served as a trustee with United Methodist Theological Seminary in Delaware, Ohio, a trustee with Woodside Cemetery, was involved with Doty House then Abilities First, SPEBSQSA barbershop chorus and served as president of the local Red Cross. He and Nancy moved to Mount Pleasant Retirement Village. They traveled extensively and had a vacation home on Lake Charlevoix in Michigan.
Bill is survived by his wife, Nancy; son Thomas W. (Shelly) Harrison & David A. (Karen) Harrison; grandchildren, Emma (Brett) Beckett, David (Beth) Harrison, Libby (Ben) Geelan & Katie Harrison; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 11:00 am at Monroe United Methodist Church, 206 East Ave., Monroe, followed by a luncheon at the church.
