William Clayton Smith

William Clayton Smith, 80, of Middletown, died Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. He was born in Middletown on March 29, 1930 to parents Chester and Mary (Fay) Smith.

Bill worked as a technical repairman at Armco / AK Steel for 31 years. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Ruth (Mersch Kleingers) Smith; four sons, William Smith, Michael (Lorna) Smith, Richard Smith and David (Susan) Smith; five step-children, Cathy (Mike) Lahey, Jim (Mary Jean) Kleingers, Barbara (Brian) Grant, Elaine (Drew) Foster and Mark (Pam) Kleingers; brother, Don (Paula) Smith; sister, Mary (Howard) Margerum; seven grandchildren, Abby (Ben) Bremer, Mandy (Jeff) Neeley, Ali (Kyle) Wolf, Ashley (Grahm) Halcomb, Matt (Corey) Smith, Michael Smith and Andrea Smith; seventeen step-grandchildren, Ruth Ann Lahey, Katie Lahey, Beth (Dave) Harrison, Michael Kleingers, Matt Kleingers, Tom Kleingers, Joey Kleingers, Robyn Grant, Peter Grant, Jack Grant, Will Grant, Kim Foster, Chris Foster, Jill Foster, Allie Kleingers, Daniel Kleingers and Bridgette Kleingers; and 7 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Chardell Smith; parents; and brothers, Chester Smith and Jerry Smith.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 12, 2010 at 10:00 am at Holy Family Parish - Holy Trinity Church, 201 Clark Street, Middletown with Father John Civille and Father David Fay as celebrants. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Middletown Combined Honor Guard.
