William J. Childers

January 4, 1943 — June 20, 2013

William "Bill" J. Childers, age 70, of Middletown passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2013 after having fought the good fight.

He was born Jan. 4th, 1943 in West Liberty, Kentucky to Helen J. (Trimble) and William H. Childers. At a young age he was involved in Scouts. He married his high school sweetheart, Susan C. Davidson, in Dayton, Ohio on Sept. 1st, 1962.

Bill worked at AK Steel in the hot-strip maintenance department and was fondly known as "Bulldog."
A favorite hobby of his was tropical fish, which led to owning Midtown Aquarium. He enjoyed coaching his son's knothole teams. He was always a devoted husband, father, and papaw. He loved watching his children and grandchildren participate in their activities. Those who knew him enjoyed his sense of humor, and looked forward to his jokes, stories, and silly songs. He was member of Lincoln Lodge # 693 F. & A. M. and the York Rite, he was raised on Feb. 13, 1963. As an avid bridge player he was able to obtain the Life Master award in 2010. Later in life, he chose to complete a lay pastor training program and graduated in 2006. He was called by the Lord to serve others through ministering in nursing homes and filling the pulpit. He was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church.

Mr. Childers is survived by his wife, Susan Childers; son, David (Laura) Childers; daughter, Julie (Chris) Frey; grandchildren, Taylor, Haley & Lucas Childers & Carli Frey.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph; parents; & sister, Vicki Peters.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Chirag Shah and the staff of Atrium Medical Center.

Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 10:00 am at Mary H. Kittredge Chapel at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village, 225 Britton Lane, Monroe with Chaplain Karen Fleming and Pastor Ken Atchinson officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
