William Lawrence Howell, 83, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2011, at Atrium Medical Center. He was born in Independence, West Virginia, the son of the late Vincent E. and Hazel L. (Murray) Howell. After graduating from high school in Newburg, West Virginia, he was employed at Hayden Chemical Plant and Sterling Faucet Company in Morgantown, West Virginia. Bill worked for Armco Steel from 1946 to 1953. He was employed by Howe Motor Company for 16 years and was the truck sales manager for Sweeney Chevrolet at Tri-County, retiring in 1982. After retirement, he worked at various part-time jobs which included the Public Relations Director of Transportation at Tri-State Auto Auction and Cincinnati Auto Auction. He retired as a tour bus driver in 2008. For several years he was employed as a substitute bus driver for the Madison and Middletown Schools. He always felt blessed to be involved in many jobs by choice. Bill enjoyed traveling, camping, hunting, hiking in the mountains and writing poetry. He loved to tell stories about growing up in West Virginia. His winters were spent in Arizona and Ft. Myers, Florida. His favorite past time was playing shuffleboard and being on the traveling team. Bill was a 56-year member of the Trenton Lions Club during which time he held several offices and was past president for 2 terms. He was a Cub Scout committee person and financial leader. He helped with many Trenton community projects. He was a member of the Trenton Historical Society, Friends of Chrisholm, and the Newburg United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, JoAnn; son, Dr. James A. Howell (Diana); three grandchildren, Emily Howes (Lieutenant Colonel Matthew), Jennifer Spriggs (Roman) and Captain Ryan Howell (Molly); four great grandsons, Joseph, Garrett and Justin Howes and Alexander Spriggs. Also, he is survived by a special nephew, Harold V. Howell (Diane); two great nephews, Stuart Howell, Ethan Howell (Jennifer), their families and cousin, Kay Daughtery (Charles) who was the rock Bill leaned on during his recurring illness.
Bill was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert V. Howell (Unadell) and James D. Howell.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 11:00 am at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown with Reverend Lin Sylvester officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service from 10:00 - 11:00 am. Memorial donations may be made to the Children's Hospital Foundation, 801 Roeder Rd., Suite 300, Silver Springs, MD 20910 in memory of William Howell and in honor of Justin Howes (great grandson). Interment will be private at Butler County Memorial Park.
