William Thomas Maxwell, 90, of Monroe, Ohio, died on May 16, 2003, at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. He was born in Butler, Pennsylvania on March 6, 1913, but spent most of his life in Middletown, before moving to Mt. Pleasant in 1993.
Mr. Maxwell received his undergraduate degree from Carnegie Tech, attended the Philadelphia School of Textiles, and received an MBA from the Harvard School of Business. He began his working career in 1937 at the Lima Woolen Mills in Lima, Ohio, but had to abandon that when the mill closed. He spent more than 35 years with Armco Steel in Industrial Relations beginning in Butler, Pennsylvania, and subsequently held positions in Ashland, Kentucky and Middletown, Ohio, where he was involved in negotiating many labor agreements. He became Director of Industrial Relations in 1965, and was later appointed Assistant Vice President of Industrial Relations, a position he held until he retired in 1977. He was a member of Monroe Presbyterian Church, and a charter member of Browns Run Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Oleta (Cannoy) Maxwell of Monroe, Ohio; one daughter, Shirley (Thomas) Maxwell Allen of Rocky River, Ohio; two grandsons, Brad Osborne of Middletown, Ohio and Jonathan (Christina) Osborne of Missouri; two granddaughters, Betsy Allen of Salt Lake City, Utah and Cindy Allen of West Lake, Ohio; four great grandchildren, Emily Allen of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jessyln, Calab, and Jaycee Osborne; six nieces and nephews, Albert (Valerie) Rose, Jr. of Newtown, Pennsylvania, Thomas (Becky) Maxwell of Richmond, Virginia, James (Missy) Ryan, Jr. of Richmond, Virginia, Elizabeth Ryan of Richmond, Virginia, Barbara Maxwell Dyar of Houston, Texas, and Dr. William (Patricia) Maxwell of Middletown, Rhode Island; 9 great nieces and nephews and 5 great great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Thomas McCullough and Mary Belle (Claypoole) Maxwell; two sisters, Nancy Elizabeth Maxwell Rose and Mary Louise Maxwell Ryan; a brother, Robert James Maxwell, and first wife, Elsie Gage Maxwell to whom he was married for over 50 years before her death in 1990.
Memorial Service will be held Monday, May 19, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd, at Bonita Dr., with Reverend Sam Gibb officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, from 2 – 4 pm at the funeral home. Entombment will be private at the convenience of the family.
